Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I speak to a counsellor instead of a freind?

Speaking to a counsellor rather than a friend offers several advantages. Counsellors are trained professionals who bring extra benefits to the conversation, including expertise in mental health and effective therapeutic techniques. Counsellors offer objectivity and maintain strict confidentiality, ensuring that your personal information remains secure. It’s my job and passion to prioritize your well-being, and I focus on providing a welcoming space where you can express yourself openly without fear of judgment.

How do I know when it’s time to speak to a counsellor?
You can come to therapy anytime; you don’t need to wait until there’s a big issue. Sometimes it’s just nice to offload and share what’s going on in your life with a neutral person! If you are dealing with:

Not feeling like yourself
A change in your thoughts, patterns, emotions, and behaviours
Big life changes, events, or transitions
Challenges and/or suffering in your relationship(s)
A loss of interest in hobbies or things that you used to find joy in before

How do I prepare for my first session?

For the first session you need to complete all intake paperwork. Sometimes it can be helpful to bring a pen and paper to your appointment to take notes, and be prepared to be asked a lot of questions, explore your thoughts, needs, and emotions. It can be helpful to write down specific topics or themes you wish to discuss in the appointment. Keep an open mind!

For phone appointments or virtual video appointments, make sure your phone, tablet, or laptop is in good working condition. Check that your camera and microphone are functioning properly. Install any necessary software or updates in advance. Choose a confidential and quiet space for the session and make sure your device is charged to prevent disruptions.

How do I know if my counsellor is a good fit?

With a free 15-minute consultation call you have the opportunity to connect, ask questions, and determine if the provider you selected is a good fit based on your needs. Signs if it’s a good fit: you feel comfortable speaking openly with the provider, your sessions are productive, they provide you with constructive and helpful feedback, and you feel motivated to attend your therapy appointments.

Am I able to use my extended health benefits?

Yes, I accept most extended health insurance in British Columbia with direct billing. Please contact me to confirm your health insurance provider before booking.

Will my therapy session be confidential?

Clients have a right to privacy, and one of the perks of going to therapy is that what they share with their counsellor stays with the counsellor. This means that we do not share your personal information or details of our sessions with anyone else, and any documentation related to our work together is stored in a secure online platform.

However, as counsellors, we do have certain limitations, with the following exceptions, we would not be able to ensure confidentiality:

If you present a risk of physical harm to yourself or others, we are obligated to notify the appropriate parties.
If there is a suspected case of child neglect or abuse, we have a duty to report to Family and Children’s Services.
If clinical records are subpoenaed through a court order.
If a presenting issue is beyond our scope of practice, we may seek clinical supervision/consultation. However, in this instance, your personal information would remain anonymous as we would continue to ensure your privacy.
To report misconduct of a professional within our own governing body.
